Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Capela das Almas and Largo da Oliveira. You'll visit kid-friendly attractions like Sameiro Sanctuary and Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral). Get out of town with these interesting Porto side-trips: Se de Braga (in Braga), Castelo de Montemor o Velho (in Montemor-o-Velho) and Guimaraes (Citania de Briteiros & Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira). There's lots more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Santuario Nossa Senhora dos Remedios, examine the collection at FC Porto Museum, steep yourself in history at Igreja e Mosteiro da Santa Cruz, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Igreja de Santo Antonio dos Congregados.
