Nouakchott — 3 nights

Nouakchott, which means "place of the winds" in Berber language, serves as the capital and largest city of Mauritania, and one of the largest cities in the Sahara.
Kick off your visit on the 19th (Mon): browse the eclectic array of goods at Marche Capitale, then pick up some local products at Galerie Zeinart, then get into the urban bustle at Centre culturel francais St Exupery, and finally kick back and relax at Plage de Nouakchott. Keep things going the next day: buy something for everyone on your list at Al Khaima Mall, then take a leisurely stroll along Port de Peche, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Saudi mosque, and finally explore the wide array of goods at Marche Turc.

To find photos, other places to visit, more things to do, and tourist information, go to the Nouakchott attractions app.

Vast, sparse, and unexplored by international visitors, Mauritania consists mainly of desert landscapes. In the north, the desert breaks into rocky massifs, hiding a collection of World Heritage-listed caravan towns, highlights of many adventurous Mauritania itineraries. Much of the country's Atlantic coast has been protected as part of a national park, and its wealth of migratory birds make holidays in Mauritania particularly popular with nature lovers.
