Grenoble — 59 nights

Capital of the Alps

At the foot of the French Alps where the river Drac joins the Isère (the lion and the serpent), Grenoble offers you tons of winter and summer activities to keep the entire family busy, like hiking, climbing, skiing, and snowboarding, as well as swimming in clean mountain lakes.
Step off the beaten path and head to Musee Dauphinois and Musee des Troupes de Montagne. Explore Grenoble's surroundings by going to Musee International de la Chaussure (International Footwear Museum) (in Romans-sur-Isere), Tournon-sur-Rhone (Château-Musée de Tournon-sur-Rhône, Passerelle Marc Seguin, &more) and Tain-l'Hermitage (La Cite du Chocolat Valrhona & Musee Palue). There's much more to do: don't miss a visit to Fort de la Bastille, see the interesting displays at Musee de la Resistance et de la Deportation de l'Isere, contemplate the long history of Ancien palais du Parlement de Dauphine, and see the sights as you ascend with a climbing tour.

For maps, other places to visit, photos, and other tourist information, read Grenoble trip planner.

If you are flying in from United States, the closest major aiports are Grenoble-Isère Airport, Chambéry-Savoie Airport and Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport. Expect a daytime high around 76°F in June, and nighttime lows around 55°F.
