Create an itinerary including Skara Brae
A Neolithic village on Scotland's scenic coast, Skara Brae is Europe's best-preserved settlement of the period. It's known as the Scottish Pompeii because of the exceptional preservation. UNESCO recognizes Skara Brae as a World Heritage Site in an area of excavation where remains of Neolithic life are still being discovered. In the on-site museum, view the runic "writings," iconic spiral designs carved in stone balls. Some scientists think these carvings are a form of the written word. • Interesting location. At this time, make sure you book ahead (we didn't at first and got caught out by a few bus parties but were able to come back a little later). The state of preservation is amazing and to see how the whole village linked together is fascinating.
  • Superb cluster of excavated prehistoric dwellings - reminded me a little of Pompei - and a life size reconstruction of one you can enter and look around. I really liked the walk with all the time line signposts which gave a really good perspective on how old this village actually is. Beautifully preserved and presented.
