The Powel House is a historic house museum located at 244 South 3rd Street, between Willings Alley and Spruce Street, in the Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Built in 1765 in the Georgian style, and embellished by second owner Samuel Powel (1738–1793), it has been called "the finest Georgian row house in the city." As with other houses of this type, the exterior facade is understated and simple, but the interior was elaborately appointed.

  • This was one door down from our wonderful apartment. The house is well restored, and well furnished. Well worth a stop.

  • Small but exceptional home. Lots of events happened here. precolonial and colonial. The fore-fathers gathered and celebrated here. The house also served several functions throughout...

  • WOW! I went here for an event but this place is worth just a visit. Beautifully restored. George Washinton, Ben Franklin were all frequent guests back in the day and you know this was definitely the party place to be in the late 18th century. The Washingtons celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary at the home. Make sure you see the china Martha Washington gifted to Mrs. Powell.
  • Historic, beautifully preserved mansion in Society Hill built in 1765. It was home to Elizabeth and Mayor Samuel Powel, who hobnobbed with our nation's founders. I visited for a fundraising event, and the garden area was decorated with white lights for the occasion. It would be perfect for an intimate wedding or party. Most of the rooms are open and restored, plus a knowledgeable guide was provided to offer tours.
